Matthias Wegele is freelance conductor. Before he has been Music Director of Bundespoilzeiorchester Hannover from 2017 to 2019. He represented its chief conductor Matthias Höfert, who was on parental leave. Previously, Matthias Wegele also led the Polizeiorchester Niedersachsen in the 2016/2017 season as a parental representative for Thomas Boger.
In addition, Matthias Wegele is musical director of the summer project OPER AUF DEM LANDE since more than 10 years, in which he is committed to promoting highly talented young musicians and singers as well as developing extraordinary performance concepts.
In the years 2011 to 2015 he was First Kapellmeister and Deputy Music Director at the Landestheater Detmold, where he had already directed two productions in 2007/2008. In Detmold Wegele conducted works of R. Strauss SALOME, E. Humperdink HÄNSEL und GRETEL, G. Verdi TRAVIATA, TROVATORE, OTELLO, C. Saint-Saens SAMSON & DALILA, G. Puccini MADAME BUTTERFLY, IL TRITTICO, W.A. Mozart FIGARO, ENTFÜHRUNG, ZAUBERFLÖTE, FINTA GIARDINIERA, P.I. Tschaikowsky SCHWANENSEE, DORNRÖSCHEN, Prokofjew ROMEO & JULIA, L. Bernstein WEST SIDE STORY etc. Previously, he was engaged as Kapellmeister from 2009 to 2011 at the Theater for Lower Saxony in Hildesheim. From 1990 to 2001 he was chief coach and Kapellmeister at the Staatsoper Hannover and from 2001 to 2009 musical director of the Operetten-Tournee-Theater Hannover. As a freelance conductor Matthias Wegele had engagements in Germany and abroad.
As a member of the State Opera and Ballet Theater in Antalya, he regularly conducted in Turkey. In addition, the New Symphony Orchestra and the Duna Orchestra engaged him for symphonic concerts in Berlin and Budapest.
Matthias Wegele is very interested in connecting people from different cultures through the everywhere spoken language MUSIC. Probably the most extraordinary meeting in this respect was the Vietnamese first performance of the opera DER FREISCHÜTZ by Carl Maria von Weber at the National Theater Hanoi in Vietnam.
With a lectureship for opera part-studies at the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hannover, Matthias Wegele is particularly committed to young singers. As a guest lecturer for conducting, he also taught for several semesters at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2008, he has been directing the summer project OPER AUF DEM LANDE, which he founded together with Prof. Hans-Peter Lehmann.
Matthias Wegele studied conducting (Prof. Karlheinz Bloemeke), piano (Prof. Elisabeth von Haimberger), singing, horn and school music at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold and was soon a long-standing ensemble member of the State Opera in Hannover. Here he developed a large repertoire in all areas of music theater from opera to ballet.
